Both directions of Interstate 880 were closed Tuesday afternoon in Oakland near the High Street exit because of power lines downed across both sides of the freeway, officials said.
Smoke was coming from northbound lanes around 12:30 as the live power lines fell onto roadways slicked by rain, according to the California Highway Patrol.
The power lines were expected to take at least an hour to clear, and Pacific Gas and Electric Company crews were working to fix the downed lines, officials said.
